rules
General
1. Feiseanna are open to dancers from ALL organizations in the world. 2. In matters pertaining to dance, the adjudicator's decision is final. 3. If an individual wants to object to an adjudicator's decision, the objection has to be presented in writing on the day of the feis with a fee of $15. If the objection is upheld, the fee will be return; if not, the fee will be retained by Mist of Ireland School of Dance.
4. The Mist of Ireland School of Dance reserves the right to refuse any entry.
Conduct at Feis
5. No smoking or drinking of alcohol is permitted on the premises.
6. The use of flash photography, videos, and digital or motion picture cameras is prohibited except during award presentation. This is to protect children and prevent misuse.
7. Adjudicators and musicians may not be approached except by the Feis Committee.
8. Teachers, parents, and instructors are not allowed to give instructions or directions to dancers while they are competing.
9. Only competitors in the current event and the Feis Committee are allowed at side stage during a competition.

COMPETITIONS
- In Beginner through Intermediate level competitions where there are 5 or more competitors, first and second place winners will move up to the next level in that dance. First place in Novice through Prizewinner will move up to the next level.
- Dancers may enter each dance at the level they compete in. However, dancers may NOT dance in the same dance in two separate levels.
- At no time may a dancer enter a competition in a level below their current competitive level. This is to maintain fairness for all competitors.
- Awards will be determined in proportion to the number of competitors. Dancers must be in full costume, including dance shoes, when receiving awards.
- If a dancer fails to start at the correct time after introduction is played, OR if a dancer stops, then this dancer cannot be placed in the top 3 positions. Exceptions will be made at the adjudicator's discretion in cases of accidental falling, costume malfunctions, etc. Any dancer who does a false or early start will be awarded only one point for the round. A false or early start is defined as any movement made before the actual start of the step from the usual standing position with the exception of pointing the foot, or rising on to toes. These are the only exceptions.
- A dancer will be penalized for barging or intentional bumping. This will be at the adjudicator's discretion.
- In the Solo Competitions, dancers will dance Beginners through Prizewinner will dance 32 bars of music of each dance. Open will dance 48 bars of music of each dance (except Traditional Sets). The dancers will be in line on stage and will come forward two at a time to dance their steps. There will be an 8 bar count of music allowed in between each set of dancers.
- Traditional Sets maybe danced by dancers in Novice, Prizewinners and Open. Dancers will dance the first full step and the first set on the right foot only.
- Non Traditional Sets maybe danced by dancers in Open only.
- The Mist of Ireland School Dance reserves the right to merge, cancel or add age groups and competitions on the day of the event.
- In solo grade competitions where there are 20 or more dancers competing in any dance, the competition will be split into an A and B competition. The split will be determined by date of birth. Age Groups
- Age of dancer is determined by as of January 1st of the current year. I.e. if a dancer is 9 years old on January 1st, they would dance in the Under 10 category for the year. Céilí
- Céilí dances specified for the competition will be danced as documented in the Ar Rince Foirne.
- Length of Céilí Dances: A) All progressive dances (e.g., Fairy Reel): once through. B) Three Tunes: up to and including the Hook and Chain. C) All Others: up to and including 1st tops doing 1st figure Figure (2 and 3 hands)
- Entry numbers will determine the age groups.
- 2-Hands and 3-Hands must be 48 bars in length (3 steps).
- Dancers cannot dance two of the same figure dance in the same age group. I.e. Susie and Jane compete in Under 10 2 hand reel. Either of them cannot exit the stage and compete with someone else for an additional 2-hand reel in the Under 10 category.
- Figures must be danced to reel music.
- Figures must be done in soft shoes.
